HIGHLIGHTS
The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the border with Kenya, offering a quieter and less crowded trekking experience. Known for its gradual ascent and scenic vistas, Rongai is ideal for climbers who prefer solitude, wildlife encounters, and a more gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro’s alpine environment.
Starting at Rongai Gate, the route passes through lush forest, moorland, and alpine desert zones, with panoramic views of the Kenyan plains. Wildlife sightings are common, including monkeys, antelopes, and a variety of bird species. The Rongai Route provides excellent altitude acclimatization, increasing the likelihood of summit success while offering a peaceful and scenic climb.
Day 1: Arusha to First Cave Camp – Start Your Kilimanjaro Adventure
Begin your journey with a scenic transfer from Arusha to Rongai Gate for park registration. Meet your experienced guide and support team, then start trekking through lush tropical forest on gently sloping trails. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Kilimanjaro’s wildlife as you gradually ascend.
Reach First Cave Camp at 8,600 feet, where you can relax and soak in the natural beauty of your surroundings. This peaceful first night under the African sky sets the perfect tone for your climb ahead.

Terrain: Gradual ascent through montane forest, transitioning into moorland, with gently sloping trails. The forest is alive with birds, monkeys, and unique flora. As you climb higher, the trees thin, revealing expansive views of the northern plains of Kilimanjaro.

Day 3 – Kilimanjaro View Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Terrain: The trek moves from moorland into alpine desert, with rocky paths and open landscapes. Vegetation thins as you gain altitude, revealing dramatic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is moderately steep in sections but manageable for steady-paced trekkers.

Day 4 – Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (High Camp)
Distance: ~6 km (3.7 miles)

Terrain: The trail gradually climbs through alpine desert and rocky terrain, with minimal vegetation. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic, offering spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak. The path is steady but requires endurance due to the thinner air at high altitude.

Day 5 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut
Distance: ~12 km ascent, ~17 km descent (total ~29 km / 18 miles)

Altitude Loss: ~7,100 ft (2,175 m) descending to Horombo
Hiking Duration: 12–16 hours (depending on pace and conditions)
Terrain: Rocky, volcanic, and alpine desert terrain with steep sections approaching the summit. Trails may be icy or loose near the crater rim.
